What Prevents Victory

What Prevents Victory?

Based on Islamic principles, victory is ultimately decreed by Allah and is not solely dependent on material strength, numbers, or worldly power. Rather, it is a reward for true faith, obedience, and patience.

The following outlines what prevents victory and the alternative, spiritual, and moral ways Islam offers to convey the message of Allah.

What Prevents Victory (The Causes of Defeat)

According to the Quran and Sunnah, victory is delayed or withheld due to several factors:

Sins and Disobedience: Collective disobedience to Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ is a major barrier. As Umar b. al-Khattab noted, Muslims are victorious over their enemies because their sins outnumber ours; if sins were equal, enemies would defeat us due to superior numbers.

Love of the World (Wahn): The Prophet ﷺ described wahn as a disease where the Ummah loves the world and dislikes death, causing them to become weak and ineffective, like "scum on a flood".

Internal Disunity and Infighting: Disputing among themselves causes the Ummah to lose heart, weakens their resolve, and removes their strength, leading to defeat.

Diseases of the Heart: Pride, selfishness, arrogance, and envy, particularly when attributing victory to themselves rather than to Allah, can turn success into defeat.

Abandoning Dawah and Taqwa: Neglecting to uphold Allah's law and failing to call others to the path of Allah prevents divine help.

Islam Offers Another Way: The True Message

Islam suggests that victory is often achieved through methods that may seem to go against conventional worldly logic, focusing on spiritual strength and moral conviction.

Winning Hearts Through Good Example: The most powerful way to convey the message is through the practical example of a good Muslim—being honest, kind, and generous. Actions speak louder than words in spreading Islam.

Wisdom and Gentle Preaching: Inviting others to the way of Allah should be done with wisdom, patience, and good manners, rather than through force, arguments, or pushy methods.

The Power of Dawah (Conveying the Message): The goal is simply to share information and bring people towards the remembrance of Allah, not to force conversion. This is considered a victory in itself.

Reframing Victory and Defeat: True victory is not just dominating, but maintaining faith during hardship. Even if the message is delivered and the bearer is killed, the message has been conveyed, which is a form of triumph.

Patience and Steadfastness (Sabr): A key way to victory is enduring, as highlighted in Surah Al-Asr (103), which emphasizes believing, doing good deeds, and advising each other to truth and patience.

In the Qur'ān, Allah ﷻ promises victory to the believers. He ﷻ also mentions the causes and circumstances that prevent victory and bring defeat. As believers, we must learn these reasons so as not to fall victim to them and suffer the indignities we see today.

1. Sins

Allah ﷻ says,

"Indeed, Allah fulfilled His promise to you when you swept them away by His permission, then your courage weakened and you disputed about the command and disobeyed, after He had shown you what you liked. Some of you sought worldly gain, while others sought a heavenly reward. He denied you victory over them as a test, yet He has pardoned you. And Allah is Gracious to the believers."

(Surah Al Imran: Ayat152)

This āyah refers to the Battle of Uḥud, in which an initial victory turned into defeat when archers disobeyed the Prophet ﷺ and left their posts. Allah mentions the reasons for this defeat: disobedience to the Messenger ﷺ and the Commander of the army, disputing amongst each other, being distracted by the spoils of war, and focusing on the world instead of the hereafter.

Even though 300 hypocrites withdrew before the battle began, this did not affect the outcome of the battle. However, the disobedience of a small group of sincere Companions changed the course of the entire battle. Their actions not only harmed themselves but also harmed the entire Muslim community. Seventy great Companions lost their lives, including the Leader of the Martyrs, the beloved uncle of the Prophet ﷺ: Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu). Many more were injured, including the Prophet ﷺ himself.

The Muslims paid a heavy price because of just one act of disobedience. This is despite the Messenger of Allah ﷺ being in their midst. Contrast this with the sins of the Ummah today. How many of our own personal sins are resulting in the destruction and oppression of Muslims around the world?

Allah (ʿazza wa jall) says:

"For each one there are successive angels before and behind, protecting them by Allah’s command. Indeed, Allah would never change a people’s state ˹of favour˺ until they change their own state ˹of faith˺. And if it is Allah’s Will to torment a people, it can never be averted, nor can they find a protector other than Him.."

(Surah Ar Rad1: Ayat 11)

Just as collective obedience leads to victory, collective disobedience leads to Allah removing the peace and prosperity of a nation.

ʿAbdullah b. ʿUmar (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhumā) said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and said, "O Muhājīrīn! There are five things you will be tested with; and I seek Allah's protection that you live to see them:

(1) Immorality will not become so widespread in a nation to such an extent that they commit it openly, except that plague and diseases which were unknown to their ancestors will spread among them.

(2) They will not cheat in weight and measure, except that they will be stricken with famine, high costs of the rulers;

(3) They will not withhold zakāh from the sky; and were it not for animals, no rain would fall on them.

(4) They will not violate their covenant with Allah and His Messenger, except that Allah will allow their enemies to overcome them they possess.

(5) Their leaders will not rule according to the Book of Allah, and they will not choose the good of what Allah has sent down, except that Allah will cause them to fight amongst themselves" (Ibn Mājah).

Sins and the disobedience of Allah and His Messenger ﷺ are the greatest victory-blockers. Before the Battle of Qadisiyyah, ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) advised Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ and his army, "Fear your sins more than you fear the enemy, as your sins are more dangerous to you than your enemy. We Muslims are only victorious over our enemy because their sins outnumber ours, not for any other reason. If our sins were equal to those of our enemy, then they would defeat us due to their superior numbers and resources."

2. Infighting

A major barrier to victory is infighting and disunity. Allah ﷻ says:

"Believers! When you encounter a group (in battle), stand firm and remember Allah abundantly, so you may triumph. Obey Allah and His Messenger and do not quarrel with one another, lest you lose heart and your moral courage. And persevere, for surely Allah is with those who persevere."

(Surah Al Anfal: Ayat 45-46)

Allah ﷻ says,

And he َ:

"As for the disbelievers, they are guardians of one another. And unless you ˹believers˺ act likewise, there will be great oppression and corruption in the land"

(Surah Al Anfal : Ayat 73)

This āyah makes it clear that if the believers do not help and support each other, the result will be terrible corruption and bloodshed on the earth.

History has repeatedly shown that fragmentation and disunity lead to weakness and defeat. External threats to the Ummah can always be overcome with the help of Allah. However, internal conflicts cause Muslims to undermine themselves and implode, inevitably culminating in external defeat and failure.

3. Diseases of the Heart

After the victory of the Battle of Badr, Allah ﷻ reminded the believers that victory came directly from Allah, not from themselves. It was He who enveloped them with sleep when they most needed it, sent down gentle rain and reinforcements from among the angels, made them stand firm, and caused the disbelievers to lose their morale. Thus, the believers should not feel any pride and they should not attribute victory to themselves. Allah ﷻ says;

"It was not you who killed them, but it was Allah who did so. Nor was it you (O Prophet) who threw (a handful of sand at the disbelievers), but it was Allah who did so, rendering the believers a great favor. Indeed Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing"

(Surah Al Anfal : Ayat 17)

The believers should praise and thank Allah Alone, for He favored them with victory.

Allah ﷻ also warned them from being like those disbelievers who came out full of arrogance and pride. Allah ﷻ says,

"Do not be like those who leave their homes full of arrogance, showing off to people, and preventing others from Allah's Path. And Allah is All-Encompassing of what they do"

(Surah Al Anfal : Ayat 47)

In another āyah, Allah reminds the believers;

"Indeed Allah has given you victory on many battlefields, and on the Day of Ḥunayn when you took pride in your great numbers, but they proved of no advantage to you. The earth, despite its vastness, seemed to close in on you, then you turned back in retreat."

(Surah AT Taubah: Ayat 25)

Before the Battle of Ḥunayn began, the Muslims felt supremely confident and proud because of their large numbers. However, it did not benefit them: thousands of the Companions fled from the battlefield, resulting in utter chaos and confusion.

The road to the downfall of many nations and armies throughout history has been paved with self-deception and the false impression of power and invulnerability. Victory does not come from angels or from numbers or from weapons. Victory comes from Allah, Alone.

Many of the Ummah's predicaments today - including the lack of unity - are caused by the diseases of the hearts e.g. pride, showing off, self-admiration, envy, cowardice, stinginess, greed, and selfishness. The root of most of the world's problems is diseased hearts. Hearts which do not know Allah, hearts which are full of arrogance, greed and selfishness. Hearts which have become corrupted by sins and no longer taste the sweetness of īmān. Hearts torn apart by pride, envy and hatred, resulting in a fractured Ummah.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The goodness of the earlier generations of this Ummah is due to their zuhd (abstinence) and yaqīn (conviction); and the latter generation of this Ummah will be ruined because of shuḥḥ (stinginess and greed) and false hopes" (Bayhaqī).

4. Love of the World

Allah ﷻ says;

"Indeed, Allah fulfilled His promise to you when you ˹initially˺ swept them away by His Will, then your courage weakened and you disputed about the command and disobeyed,1 after Allah had brought victory within your reach. Some of you were after worldly gain while others desired a heavenly reward. He denied you victory over them as a test, yet He has pardoned you. And Allah is Gracious to the believers."

(Surah Al Imran: Ayat 152)

In the Battle of Uḥud, the archers left their posts since they were worried that they might miss out on the spoils of war. This āyah is a reminder that the desire for worldly gain prevents victory.

One of the key blockers of victory and the root cause of the ummah's humiliation is the love of this world (one of the diseases of the heart). The Prophet ﷺ said, "The nations will soon summon one another to attack you just as diners invite one another to share their dish." Someone asked, "Will it be due to our small number at the time?" He ﷺ replied, "No, there will be many of you at the time, but you will be like the froth and scum of a flood. Allah will remove from your enemies' hearts their fear of you, and He will cast fear into your hearts."

Someone asked, "O Messenger of Allah, what is wahn?" He ﷺ replied, "Love of the world and a dislike of death" (Abū Dāwūd).

"The love of the world is the root of every shortcoming and the source of all corruption." – Imām al-Ghazālī (raḥimahullah)

5. Despair

It's difficult to look at the tragedies around the Ummah and not feel depressed and hopeless. However, Allah ﷻ reminds us,

"Do not lose heart, and do not grieve, for you will have the upper hand, if you are (true) believers"

(Surah l Imran: Ayat 139)

This āyah was revealed after the Battle of Uḥud, which was a very painful time for the Muslims. Over seventy of the Companions were slain in battle. The Prophet's beloved uncle Hamzah was killed and then mutilated. He ﷺ himself was wounded. Thus, Allah revealed this āyah after the battle to console the Companions, instructing them not to lose hope and always be certain of Allah's help, as long as they remain true to their īmān.

This is a timeless lesson and reminder for the Ummah: to never lose hope and become despondent. No matter how many enemies unite against the ummah, no matter how many precious souls are martyred, no matter how many homes, mosques and hospitals are destroyed — the believers should always think good of Allah and have unwavering yaqīn that Allah will most certainly help those who help His dīn. Despite all the odds, everyone in the Ummah must work to bring justice and goodness to this world.

The believers may see victory in their lifetime or may not. However, they should never give up. Instead, they should try their utmost to pave the way for future generations. They must plant trees knowing that they will never sit under their shade.

6. Weakness and Cowardice

Allah ﷻ says,

"Imagine˺ how many devotees fought along with their prophets and never faltered despite whatever ˹losses˺ they suffered in the cause of Allah, nor did they weaken or give in! Allah loves those who persevere."

(Surah Al Imran: Ayat 146)

Cowardice is a deadly disease of the heart, which the Prophet ﷺ sought refuge from every day. The believer is brave: he is certain that his sustenance and his death are both from Allah. He fears none but Allah. When he sees something powerful, he remembers that Allah is al-Qawiyy: The Most Powerful.

A strong Ummah cannot be mentally or physically weak. It must not capitulate to mere mortals who seek to drag them to the Hell-fire. It must emancipate itself from the shackles of colonialism, materialism and hedonism. And it must realize how fortunate it is to have been granted divine guidance and the honor of being Allah's vicegerents on this earth.

7. Internal Defeat

In the previous point, Allah ﷻ mentioned the Prophets and those who remained steadfast with Him. After describing their reward in the subsequent āyah, Allah then continues to say;

But no! Allah is your Guardian, and He is the best Helper.

(Surah Al Imran:Ayat 150)

In this āyah, Allah is reminding the believers to stay firm on their īmān, and not to fall into the trap of the disbelievers and the hypocrites. They are being warned from yielding to them and seeking to please them by obeying them. Instead of taking the disbelievers as their masters, they should take Allah as their Master, as He is the One who can truly help them. Following the disbelievers will lead to eternal loss; following the dīn of Allah will result in true success, in this world and the hereafter.

Today, the Ummah has become accustomed to living under the jackboot of Islam's enemies who perpetrate relentless tyranny, unchecked crimes, and rampant corruption upon it.

And yet still, despite all this physical subjugation, it is another enemy that has today paralyzed us. One which has disoriented our minds, killed our spirits, and left us enamored with our enemies.

It is our mental and cultural defeat. The disbelievers may not occupy our lands anymore, but their ways occupy our minds and hearts — and this remains our greatest setback.

Enticing 'progressive' ideas, debased sensual entertainment and far-reaching media have blurred our faculties. With time, this has created an inferiority complex towards our dīn and towards our native languages, cultures, and dress. A planned and systemic dissemination of their ideas has eroded our core identity and crushed centuries-long values of morality, family and community.

We foolishly imitate the disbelievers' ways, no matter how absurd, blindly accepting their evil materialism, hedonism and godlessness. Instead of deriving strength and guidance from our revelation and heritage, we seek it from their degenerate celebrities: manicured human devils who steal the minds and innocence of our youth.

Resisting the occupation of one's land is easier when compared to dajjalic enslavement of our minds. This enslavement cannot be seen, and for many, not even believed. How do you convince the zoo animal, who is well-fed and looked after, that it is still imprisoned?

Only one religion clears the fog.

Islam Offers Another Way

As believers, it is our duty to live for Allah and establish His dīn on His earth. Rather than blindly following what popular culture feeds us, we should reflect on the damage that materialism, hedonism ,and liberalism have wreaked on the psychological, social, economi,c and spiritual states of humanity. We should ask ourselves what values and norms we are imbibing as we zombie scroll through our social media feeds and TV channels.

We should feel and inspire in ourselves and in our youth a sense of honor (ʿizzah) for the incredible gift of Islam. We should feel privileged at being given īmān, and scared that it could be taken away from us at any time. We should strive hard to serve the dīn of Allah and remain steadfast in the face of whatever hurdles come in our way.

"We were indeed the most disgraced of all people. Allah honored and elevated us through Islam. If we seek honor from anything besides that with which Allah honored us, Allah will disgrace us." -ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu)

May Allah al-ʿAzīz (The Exalted in Might) grant honor and victory to the Ummah of Muḥammad ﷺ. May Allah al-Mawlā (The Protective Ally) protect us from all harm and make us attach our hearts to Him Alone.

Conclusion

Victory comes only by the help of Allah when believers align themselves with His commands:

وَمَا جَعَلَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بُشْرَىٰ لَكُمْ وَلِتَطْمَئِنَّ قُلُوبُكُم بِهِۦ ۗ وَمَا ٱلنَّصْرُ إِلَّا مِنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْعَزِيزِ ٱلْحَكِيمِ ١٢٦

(Surah Al Imran: Ayat 126)

The "other way" is to prioritize spiritual, inner, and moral correction over mere material gain, trusting that Allah will grant victory to those who sincerely uphold His cause, even if it is delayed.

The Purity Of Heart -Why Do We Not Experience the Sweetness of Iman and Worship?

Many of us exert ourselves in acts of worship, and yet do not experience this sweetness and happiness. One of the primary reasons is that we focus solely on the outer physical actions, and we do not give sufficient attention to the core of the worship: the inner state of the heart, which accompanies it. Ibn al-Qayyim (raḥimahullāh) writes, “You may find a person who fasts, prays, does dhikr and recites Qur’ān abundantly, but nothing from his actions reaches his heart: no fear, no hope, no love, no conviction in Allah and no happiness with Him.”

Thus, to attain a good life, we have to combine the external acts of obedience with the internal states of the heart, also called ‘the actions of the heart’. The actions of the heart include: firm belief (īmān), knowledge of Allah (maʿrifah), sincerity (ikhlāṣ), piety and mindfulness (taqwā), repentance (tawbah), trust in Allah (tawakkul), hope (rajā’), fear (khawf), gratitude (shukr), patience (ṣabr), love (ḥubb), yearning for Allah (shawq) and certainty (yaqīn).

Just as our bodies need food and drink to grow and sustain themselves, our hearts and souls need their food (‘soul food’) to flourish and stay healthy.

This will also mean having to purify our hearts from its diseases (pride, envy, greed, heedlessness, hypocrisy etc). When we are sick, we do not enjoy the taste of food. Sometimes we cannot even taste the flavour. If we are feeling nauseous, even the most expensive meal would not entice us to eat. Likewise, if our hearts are sick and diseased due to committing sins and following desires, we cannot enjoy the ‘sweetness of īmān’. We cannot find joy in worshipping Allah:

"He is the One Who sent down serenity upon the hearts of the believers so that they may increase even more in their faith. To Allah ˹alone˺ belong the forces of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise".— Dr. Mustafa Khattab,

(Surah Al Fath : Ayat 4)

Sweetness of Iman and worship,

Why Do We Not Experience the Sweetness of Iman and Worship in Islam ?

The "sweetness of Iman" and worship, or halawat al-iman, refers to the joy and happiness experienced in connection with faith and worship. Several reasons can explain why someone might not feel this sweetness, often linked to the heart's condition and actions. These include focusing solely on external actions of worship while neglecting the internal aspects of faith, neglecting the heart's purification from negative traits, and prioritizing worldly desires over the rewards of faith.

Here's a more detailed explanation:

Focus on external actions:

Some may perform prayers, fasting, and other rituals without cultivating a sincere connection to Allah. This can lead to a sense of obligation rather than genuine joy.

Neglecting the heart's purification:

If the heart is filled with negative traits like pride, envy, or greed, it cannot fully appreciate the sweetness of faith. The heart needs to be cleansed to experience the joy of worship.

Prioritizing worldly desires:

If worldly pleasures and ambitions overshadow the pursuit of spiritual growth, the individual may not find the same delight in worship. A strong focus on worldly gains can distract from the connection to Allah.

Weakening iman:

Iman, or faith, is not static; it fluctuates. When actions are not aligned with the heart's conviction, the sweetness of iman may diminish.

Living in a state of spiritual slumber:

Some individuals might experience periods of spiritual laziness or slackness, even when they are mindful of their faith.

Lack of understanding or connection:

If an individual does not fully grasp the significance of their actions, or if they are not connected to their faith, they may not feel the joy and sweetness associated with it.

In essence, the sweetness of iman is experienced when the heart is filled with faith, sincerity, and a genuine love for Allah. When these qualities are lacking, the individual may find it difficult to fully appreciate the joy and happiness associated with worship.

Sins: A Barrier to Tasting the Sweetness of Iman.

Sins deprive us of tasting the sweetness of īmān and worship. The more sweetness and joy we find in sinning, the less joy and sweetness we find in worshipping Allah:

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّـٰلِحَـٰتِ سَيَجْعَلُ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنُ وُدًّۭا ٩٦

"As for those who believe and do good, the Most Compassionate will ˹certainly˺ bless them with ˹genuine˺ love. Dr. Mustafa Khattab,

(Surah Maryam :Ayat 96)

Tasting the Sweetness of Faith

Faith has principles and has sweetness, and both are different issues.

Most people are capable of perceiving the principles of faith, but few are the ones who have been true to their covenant with Allah and paid the price of the sweetness of faith in order to taste it.

The difference between perceiving the facts of faith and testing its sweetness resembles the difference between saying one hundred billion dollars and owning this sum of money.

Hence, what attracts you to Islam is not the principles of faith, but its sweetness, and the minute you taste that sweetness you will willingly make conceivable sacrifice for the sake of keeping it.

Furthermore, you will become the happiest person in life regardless of your condition, era, country, hardship, prosperity, richness, poverty, strength, weakness, marital status, and health condition.

Tasting the sweetness of faith has an expensive price to pay, but its outcomes are amazing.

The price you should pay for it is being disciplined, being ready to sacrifice and being openhanded, and the results will be splendid.

"He is the One Who sent down serenity upon the hearts of the believers so that they may increase even more in their faith. To Allah ˹alone˺ belong the forces of the heavens and the earth. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise."— Dr. Mustafa Khattab,

{Surah Al Fath : Ayat 4}

Sweetness of Faith is Tasted and Can’t Be Seen.

Tasting the sweetness of faith is something that touches the soul, and it can’t be seen with the eye.

Actually, the true believer’s heart is of full of security, optimism, trust in Allah and the feeling that Allah loves him, and they are enough for the population of an entire country.

The first fact about the sweetness of faith is that it is tasted not seen.

Those who believe and do good will be admitted into Gardens, under which rivers flow—to stay there forever by the Will of their Lord—where they will be greeted with “Peace!”— Dr. Mustafa Khattab,

[Surah Ibrahim: Ayat 23]

To make this fact clear, if you are hungry, and you are presented a very expensive delicious meal to eat, you will indescribably enjoy every bite of it, and the one who watches you will have no idea about the taste of that food no matter how much he is prudent or wise, will he?

Asking for more food means that you are enjoying it, but if you are satisfied with few bites from the plate you have, this means that the food is not that good and you will stop eating no matter how hard you are invited to do, for this food is not that delicious.

The believer is hard to be tempted because he has tasted the sweetness of faith

What strongly proves that you have tasted the sweetness of faith is that you ask for more (you want to keep tasting it).

Accordingly, you offer night prayers, you offer voluntary fasting and you donate money to serve people.

Hence, longing for more sweetness is a sign of tasting the sweetness of faith, whereas being satisfied with few deeds and the minimum amount of prayers indicates the weak effect of the sweetness of faith on you, and it means that you haven’t tasted it yet.

In this case you have understood the principles of faith and you abide by them, but you haven’t tasted the sweetness of faith yet.

The Purity Of Heart - The Good Life = A Life of Luxury?

Everyone desires happiness, yet the paths we take and the definitions we hold for it vary greatly. For some, happiness means wealth and material possessions, for others it’s fame and recognition, while for some it’s indulgence in sensual pleasures. There are also those who find happiness in achieving breakthroughs in their fields.

Despite the abundance of pleasures and luxuries available today, many remain unfulfilled. No matter how much we accumulate or how much validation we receive, there’s often a lingering sense of emptiness within us, a void that material possessions and accolades cannot fill.

This emptiness stems from neglecting our innate instinct to recognise and worship our Creator. The pursuit of true happiness lies in knowing and worshipping Allah. As mentioned in the Quran;

But whoever turns away from My Reminder will certainly have a miserable life, then We will raise them up blind on the Day of Judgment”

 (Surah Taha: Ayat 124)

 The Good Life;

Allah promises a good life to those who do good deeds and believe in Him

Whoever does good, whether male or female, and is a believer, We will surely bless them with a good life, and We will certainly reward them according to the best of their deeds.
Dr. Mustafa Khattab, The Clear Quran

(Surah An Nahl: Ayat 97)

But what exactly is this “good life”? It’s the paradise of this world, a life where believers find contentment, happiness, and inner peace through their worship and connection with their Creator.

Abū Bakr al-Warrāq described the good life as “the sweetness of obedience.” Just as we savour delicious foods with our mouths, obedience to Allah brings a sweetness and satisfaction to the heart, which is the essence of the good life.

Truly in the heart there is a certain loneliness that cannot be removed except by spending time with Him in solitude. In it there is a sadness that cannot be removed except through the happiness of knowing Him and being true to Him … In it there is a void that cannot be filled except through loving Him, turning to Him constantly, always remembering Him, and being sincere to Him. Were a person to be given the entire world and everything in it, it would never fill this void.”

— Ibn al-Qayyim (raḥimahullāh)

However, many struggle to experience this sweetness despite engaging in acts of worship. The reason often lies in focusing solely on outward actions rather than nurturing the internal state of the heart. Ibn al-Qayyim noted that one may perform rituals abundantly but lack the inner connection with Allah.

To truly live a good life, we must combine external acts of worship with internal states of the heart, such as belief, sincerity, piety, and gratitude. Just as our bodies need nourishment, our hearts need their “soul food” to flourish.

Purifying the heart from diseases like pride and envy is essential. Just as illness diminishes the enjoyment of food, spiritual diseases hinder the sweetness of faith and worship.

The Good Life = A Life With Allah

Living a good life means living a life with Allah at its centre. It starts with sincere repentance and finding joy in reconnecting with the Creator. It’s about relishing the sweetness of prayer, finding solace in late-night conversations with Allah, and sacrificing worldly desires for His sake.

A life with Allah involves immersing oneself in the Quran, serving others selflessly, and embodying the character of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

This life isn’t about luxury or comfort but about aligning every action with the pleasure of Allah. It’s about speaking, moving, and living for His sake.

We may think that the ‘good life’ is a life devoid of any difficulties; a comfortable luxurious life. On the contrary, those who enjoy the ‘good life’ may experience some of the worst worldly difficulties. However, despite the difficulties and severe illnesses they may suffer, their hearts are at peace. Their hearts are content with Allah’s decree. They may have very little material wealth, but their hearts are brimming with īmān and the love of Allah. Our beloved Prophet ﷺ is the person who best personified this. He ﷺ owned very little of the world: he would sleep on a simple mat which would leave marks on his blessed back, but despite this, he lived the best life.

Ibn al-Qayyim (raḥimahullāh) explains that the ‘good life’ in the above āyah does not refer to a life of fine clothing, food, drink and spouses, as Allah (ʿazza wa jall) may bestow this in far greater quantities to His enemies. But rather the ‘good life’ is the life of the believer who occupies himself with one goal: pleasing his Beloved (ʿazza wa jall). Instead of feeling confused and torn in many directions of life, the believer who enjoys the ‘good life’ has one focus. Everything he does and seeks is to attain the love and closeness of his Beloved.

When he speaks, he speaks for Him. When he is silent, he is silent for Him. When he moves, he moves for Him. When he is still, he is still for Him.

His focus is Allah. He lives for Allah. He dies for Allah.
